What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is the process of adding bone tissue to your existing bone structure. At Rai Family Dentistry, we most often provide bone grafting to build up the density and structure of the jawbone. A bone graft in Stafford, Virginia, may be completed with bone from one of three sources. We may use bone fragments taken from another part of your mouth or body; this is usually the most successful form of graft. If needed, we can alternatively use bone tissue from a tissue bank or use a synthetic bone-like substance. Dr. Shivaprasanna Rai will help you determine which of these options is best for your specific health needs.

Do I need a bone graft?

Our dentist most often recommends a bone graft if you have experienced bone loss in your jaw. This occurs in most patients who have lost teeth. Once the tooth is lost, the bone structure in that area of your jaw begins to deteriorate. In order to place a dental implant and replace the tooth, a sufficient amount of bone structure is needed. A bone graft can restore your jawbone’s structure and density, allowing us to successfully place your dental implant.
