Bridging the Gap to Your Smile

Posted .

Is there a gap in your teeth that keeps you from smiling? A bridge may be the right solution for you. Bridges are a permanent prosthetic that may be recommended if you are missing one or more teeth. They are cemented to the neighboring teeth. If the gap is left unfilled, the remaining teeth could shift or rotate which could throw off your bite. This misalignment could result in a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or gum disease.

Creating a bridge can take two or more visits to the dentist to complete. Crowns are placed on the neighboring teeth, called abutments, to stabilize the bridge. An imitation tooth, called a pontic, will be attached to the crowns covering the abutments. But first, your dentist may have to make an impression of your teeth so that a custom bridge can be made that is perfect for you. A temporary bridge may be created to protect the abutment teeth in the meantime.

While bridges are meant to last several years, or even a lifetime, they could become loose or fall out. If a problem occurs, you should contact Rai Family Dentistry to schedule an appointment. One way to protect a bridge’s lifespan is to have good oral hygiene. Be sure to keep your gums and teeth healthy.
